Aniello Desiderio: “Il Fenomeno” ![]()
Aniello Desiderio’s journey as a classical guitarist began at the age of eight, when he gave his first public performance, immediately astonishing music critics who hailed him as a “wunderkind” and “the Orpheus of the guitar.” He also carries the title “Il Fenomeno.”
He quickly rose to international stages as a concert virtuoso, collecting 18 first prizes in national and international competitions. Highlights include his triumph at the International Guitar Competition in Havana, Cuba (1988), receiving the “Neapolitan of the Year” award in Italy (1988), excelling at the International Francisco Tárrega Competition in Spain (1992), and winning the top prize at the International “Guerrero” Competition in Madrid (1994).
A true champion of modern music, often referred to as “the musician’s musician,” he inspired renowned guitarist John McLaughlin to select him for the European premiere of his concerto “Thieves and Poets.”
Other composers who have written new works for him include Roland Dyens, Stephen Goss, Dale Kavanagh, Carlo Domeniconi, Simone Iannarelli, the late Angelo Gilardino, and Georg Schmitz (director of the Koblenz Festival and honorary professor at the University of Mainz, Germany).
Holding a degree with honors from the Conservatory of Music in Alessandria, Italy, Aniello Desiderio is currently Professor of Guitar at the University of Music in Avellino, Italy. He proudly represents D’Addario Strings as their artistic ambassador worldwide.
